Manufacturer of the Year: Royal Enfield

Standing on the Scramblers pitch late on at the Scramble in October, a tall man strode forcefully past having just audibly and loudly exclaimed.

The reason was the quartet of very different motorbikes being showcased beside the Staff Car by Royal Enfield. Just across the way, with Top Gear, was a bike like no other: the Kingsman. Some four-metres long, with a drinks cabinet aboard, it is spectacular simply for the sake of it and because it can be. Like so many of the things coming out of Royal Enfield’s custom department. Other manufacturers should take note.

Individual: Jeremy Townsend

The word ‘No’ isn’t in Stellantis comms director Jeremy Townsend’s vocabulary. He was the reason why the Panda was subtly given its debut at the Scramble, and his was the mint, crisp Citroën 2CV nearby – driven in over some distance (above).

He also had the same gleeful enthusiasm when grabbing the keys to the original DS when it needed to be moved back from its display at the Command Works in April, and barely a Scramble goes by without a car on display sent with his agreement. And certainly not without him wandering among the thousands on the Technical Site.

DG’s Car of the Year: Fiat Grande Panda

The Fiat Grande Panda received its first official UK public outing at the Scramble, hinting at the main Reboots & Restomods display at the October event (above).

And the car lived up to every expectation, first in it vibrant green and second in special RED charity edition. Even owners of the original were taken by it, such as Bicester Motion CEO and 4x4 owner Daniel Geoghegan. “It is still so egalitarian,” he says, pondering his car of the Scramble and never being able to shake off the Panda.

In Off Duty we said it was a car with details to pore over for hours, and it is packed with little nods and neat flourishes. And after two Scrambles, we’re still not over it.
