A Scramblers tag like no other

By now you’ll have seen the Founder Member tags cropping up here and there – possibly even through your letterbox. 

They’re a little special, only available to the very fastest Pegasus and Merlin members.

You were quick off the mark, too, because we ran out within a few short hours for Pegasus but there are some left for Merlin.

Anyway, why are the tags so special? Well they encapsulate the site, really. We wanted the very first ones to be a little piece of Bicester Heritage and, thanks to Heritage Engineering and station chaplain and resident artist Reverend Adam Gompertz, they are.

The tags themselves are precision cut from 2mm-thick aluminium. Heritage Engineering created the prototype tag, then once happy the team produced the suction pad to hold the sheets into place. The delicate blade then machined, sliced and engraved, before Billy and his team cleaned and gave them a quick once over to remove any rough edges.

It was hypnotic to watch.

Once formed and counted, it was Adam’s turn to roll his sleeves up. 

Again, this needed to be special, perhaps even unique, but definitely relevant to our storied Bicester Heritage home. So classic race fan Adam opted to create an ‘F’ in the same vein as the PROVA stamp on the back of Maserati 250Fs. Cars that would have been racing just down the road when this was a working RAF site.

A template was made and Adam set to work overlaying red, white and blue paint so each is unique. A layer of lacquer was laid on top, and it was left to dry. It will age and roughen up, creating a patina of its own, but if you want to preserve yours then another layer or two of lacquer won't hurt.

The intricate pack itself is made from recycled coffee cups, with a slot specifically to hold the member tag.
