Hangars take the limelight like never before

Some of the most familiar buildings of the former RAF Bicester have been placed in the spotlight like never before to begin a host of centenary celebrations for the historic Technical Site.

The series of special installations forms ‘A Century in Light’ and has been created by Light House Designs, a Cotswolds-based design studio that specialises in architectural lighting.

The Watch Office and nearby Fire Tender House, Building 111, were the focus for the project, along with the pillbox, Hangars 113 and 108, and the towering fir and elm trees on the apron of the airfield. The buildings combine to be the evocative first impression of the site for visitors on event days, making them the perfect candidates for the installation.

Though built in 1936, the buildings form part of the century-old Technical Site of the former RAF Bicester, the first buildings of which were constructed in 1926. Many of the buildings have been restored since 2013, with the interconnected Station Offices and Operations Block recently being given the go-ahead for its preservation.

Philip White, director of brand and marketing at Bicester Motion, said: “It has been hugely exciting to work with the Light House Designs team on A Century in Light. The centenary is not something we are approaching lightly, and we are acutely aware of each building’s significance, so to see the building celebrated in a unique fashion has been fascinating.”

Claire Styles of Light House Designs added: “Our aim was to give the architecture presence after dark while respecting its history. Lighting heritage demands restraint, precision and a deep understanding of material and scale. This installation celebrates the site’s past and signals its next chapter.”

In addition to the vibrant light installation, the Bicester Motion logo was also projected onto the broad hangar doors. The award-winning design was created by Conran Design Group as part of a rebrand in 2025 that reflects converging horizons.

The centenary of the Technical Site will be marked at the upcoming Scramble, taking place on Sunday 26 April and which sold out in record time.
