Morgan’s Super 3

Morgan's all-new and customisable Three-Wheeler

Not since the Aero 8 of 2000 had Morgan created a clean-sheet new car design. The Super 3 puts an end to that run and it is one giant leap away from outgoing Three-Wheeler.

With the Aero 8 there was no avoiding that it was still very much a Morgan – the silhouette was true to the age-old form, for a start. The task was perhaps bigger to refresh the Three-Wheeler, a design that returned to the Morgan range just over a decade ago.

Morgan says it is the biggest visual departure since 1962, when the ultra-limited and Lotus-esque glassfibre Plus 4 Plus was unveiled, and for a ‘proper’ production model it’s in many ways the biggest shift since the flat-rad +4 gained a waterfall radiator.

Beneath, or rather inside, the Super 3 is aluminium rather than steel, like the rest of the new Morgan range, but unlike the rest this is a monocoque. A Morgan first.

Between the two front wheels is a normally aspirated 1.5-litre Ford, meaning no more V-twin, combined with a five-speed gearbox borrowed from the Mazda MX-5. That is about as reliable a combination as you can get.

It’s powerful, too, squeezing out 118bhp and good for 0-60mph in around seven seconds, continuing on to 130mph.

Inboard brakes, special 20-inch Avon tyres, clever pull-rod suspension that helps keep the weight to just 635kg, a highly customisable interior and a raft of colour options will make the Super 3 an appealing proposition to those looking for a different set of wheels.

The options list also includes luggage to match or contrast, which can be strapped to the new ‘diffuser plates’ along the body that also help with airflow.

“The all-new Super 3 introduces new levels of engineering integrity to Morgan, a new sense of adventure to the brand and a new design language that indicates our future direction,” said chairman and CEO, Steve Morris.
