Bicester Heritage was abuzz with remote-control cars on Sunday 23 July as the Model Car Concours event returned with Scramblers, the official membership club of Bicester Heritage, in partnership with Motorsport UK.
A cars-and-coffee meeting with a twist to fire up the summer holidays, the Model Car Concours II Assembly was devised as an inclusive gathering to give enthusiasts of any age the chance to share their automotive passion.
The young and young at heart brought along models to display on their car’s dashboard, or in some cases on the bonnet, and fizzed small-scale RC cars around the Tarmac of the UK’s best-preserved World War Two RAF bomber base.
In keeping with the focus on promoting the hobby to the next generation, Bicester Heritage resident Motorsport UK laid on perhaps the most family-friendly of all competitive events with a Scatter Rally/Treasure Hunt setting off from its HQ in the Command Works. Entrants were provided with a map of checkpoints and list of questions to answer on the way to the finish at the home of the British Grand Prix, Silverstone, where a goodie bag also awaited.
Running in the Paddock at Bicester Heritage during the Model Car Concours II, meanwhile, a variety of machinery from Citroën Saxo to Fiat 500e performed skilful laps around a technical course as part of a taster AutoSOLO by the Oxford Motor Club. Attendees could climb aboard for a passenger lap for free all morning.
Both disciplines, the Treasure Hunt and AutoSOLO, form part of StreetCar, which is an accessible, entry-level route into motorsport that uses everyday road cars and only requires the free-of-charge Motorsport UK RS Clubman Licence. The StreetCar initiative was launched by Motorsport UK in June 2022 to promote participation in grassroots motorsport.
