The best way to go fast* in a Ford

*Might not be very fast

There has hardly been a better time to go racing than right now.

You might not make it to Formula 1 on talent alone these days. You might not make a living out of it, even. But you can certainly have a lot of fun on any given Sunday up and down the country in just about anything.

You can compare the cost of racing now with any previous era and make a case for it being cheaper, but better? Safer? Probably not.

One of those at the forefront is EnduroKA, a Ronseal name for a series of endurance races dedicated to race-prepared but very cheap and very stock Ford KAs. Only control suspension, front pads, tyres and roll-cage are prescribed.

You’ll be able to see just how stock the rest of the car is at Ford February on Sunday 26 February, our next Assembly, because a couple of cars will be in the MT Yard all morning.

EnduroKA is similar to the wildly popular Citroën C1 series, which has a marquee 24 hour race to continue the tradition of the age-old 2CV race formerly held at Snetterton. MotorSport Vision Trackdays (MSVT) is the team behind it, whose Trackday Trophy continues to be one of the simplest ways to graduate from trackdays to competition. Mixed driver pairings allow more experienced hands to share the reins with complete novices over 45-minute encounters, spreading the cost while you dip your toe in the racing water.

The recipe here is the same: the KAlendar comprises six rounds (highlights include the 12 Heures du Norfolk and Brands Hatch Indy KA 500…) and teams must be between two and four drivers, with driving time well spread around. Even Éric Boullier, he formerly of McLaren and RenaultmF1 teams,  has had a go.

Teams, as these photos show, are encouraged to be imaginative with their liveries.

Club racing, especially in tightly controlled spec series, can often promise much and deliver little. But according to Nik Berg, writer and AFK Racing driver, EnduroKA delivers on all of its promises. “Driving a slow car fast always beats driving a fast car slow,” he says. “And when there are 40-odd identical slow cars all trying to get round Paddock Hill Bend at the same time speed really isn’t the first thing on one’s mind.

“EnduroKA’s packed grid means and spec-setup regs mean the racing is always tight and a two-hour stint behind the wheel is exhilarating and exhausting. Sharing the costs across a team of four and starting with a shopping car means the cost is reasonable – especially when you consider the amount of seat time you get. I can’t wait for my first full season.”

See some EnduroKAs at Ford February. Tickets are £5 per person, or free Pegasus and Merlin members.
