An Austin J40 pedal car that will be the star of Banger & Cash: Restoring Classics on UKTV Play and which was revealed at the Scramble in April has found a new home for a snip, according to the Austin Pedal Cars team.
It sold at a recent Mathewsons auction for £7000, fresh from a three-month restoration by the Austin Pedal Cars team. It could have fetched another £5000 sold privately, Austin Pedal Cars says.
The premise of Restoring Classics is to buy a car from a Mathewsons auction, in this case one with pedal power, fix it up and send it back across the block in the name of television. The team picked this J40 up for £2150 in October 2023, looking fairly solid but sorry for itself.
Austin Pedal Cars’ restoration team returned it to its original Ash Green colour, removed the parts that suggested a previous life on a fairground ride and reverted it to pedal spec.
What was unveiled at the Bicester Heritage HQ during the Scramble was “one of the best available [J40s’] on the market today,” according to MD of Austin Pedal Cars Mark Burnett.
He added: “Bangers & Cash are famous for bringing great classic vehicles back to life. Over three months the team has carefully restored every element of this classic pedal car, ready for auction, and we have also included some additional extras, including our tailored car cover, scale model recreation and a copy of our new J40 history book, to further tempt bidders when it goes to auction. This is now a beautiful pedal car.”
The auction took place on Thursday 2 May and the episode will air later in 2024.
